11 Important Documents to Gather Before Your Move

Before you move, there’s a lot of paperwork that must be collected, saved, printed, forwarded and safeguarded. From birth certificates and wills to school and health records, here are the most important documents to gather before your residential move. We recommend keeping them all in one place, such as a folder or binder, so you always know where they are.

1.    Driver’s License and Passport

You can’t drive or hop on a plane without these two items, so make sure they’re at the top of the list when it comes to important documents to gather.

2.    School Transcripts

Call your child’s school to get a sealed copy of their school transcripts so you can provide those to their new school. You may also need these in the event you want to complete financial aid or scholarship applications.

3.    Professional Licenses

Do you have a profession that requires licensure, such as a plumber, contractor, etc.? Bring all certificates and licenses so you can transfer your practice to another city or state.

4.    Marriage Certificate

It’s possible you will have to present marriage certificate to receive benefits, like insurance, for your spouse.

5.    Tax and Stock Documents

Bring all paperwork related to your stock options and taxes, such as receipts, transactional records, copies of prior years’ taxes, and statements.

6.    Vaccination and Medical Records

Do this for yourself and your kids. You will need the vaccination records to enroll them in their new school, and you will need the medical records if you want to secure them a new doctor. Be prepared to pay a fee for these printouts.

7.    Birth Certificate and Social Security Card

If moving out of state, you may be required to provide proof of your legal name or date of birth when you go to renew your driver’s license or vehicle registration.

8.    Vehicle Title

If you plan to move across state lines, keep your car’s title on hand so you can use it to change your registration or to transfer ownership to the new owner.

9.    Vet Records

If you are bringing Fido with you, have their existing vet provide you with updated copies of their records. You can give these to the new vet upon arrival.

10. Lease/Homeowners Insurance Policy

You will have to show proof of residency in order to activate new utility services or register to vote at town hall. This will show your new address, plus you may have to bring along other documents that show proof of residency, such as paychecks and bank statements.

11. Moving Company Documents

Once you sign a contract with your movers, you will get several documents, such as a binding estimate, inventory list, moving-guide pamphlets, etc. Keep these in a safe place so you can refer to them as needed.
